US semiconductor manufacturer Vishay wants to expand its production in Itzehoe (Germany) for about €300 million. Construction of the new fab is to start next year; the company has now bought a 3-hectare plot of land.

According to media reports, 150 new jobs will be created in the first expansion phase. The company currently employs more than 470 people at its Itzehoe site. Vishay develops and manufactures semiconductor components for use in automotive, industrial and consumer electronics in Itzehoe in the northern state of Schleswig-Holstein. Meanwhile, the city of Itzehoe sees itself as an important address for technology companies. “Vishay has played a major role in Itzehoe’s increasing importance as a technology location in recent years,” deputy mayor Ralph Busch is quoted as saying in the statement. In addition to Vishay, X-Fab and the Fraunhofer spin-off OQmented also operate semiconductor production there, the latter two with a focus on MEMS.

“The production expansion is aimed at meeting the future needs of the automotive industry, as Vishay has a solid customer base in Germany and Europe,” the reports quote Vishay manager Tilo Bormann as saying. The company expects above-average growth from the foreseeable increase in electric car production and also from the necessary infrastructure such as charging stations.
