Vitesco establishes R&D center in China
The company’s strategy is clearly focused on electrified drives, explained Thomas Stierle, head of the Electrification Technology business unit at Vitesco. With the new branch in Tianjin, the company intends to expand its development capacities in the Asia-Pacific region, where Continental sees the greatest growth potential.
On a gross floor area of 9,000 square meters, the R&D center will include an office building and a laboratory where the new drive technologies can be validated and tested. Completion is scheduled for 2021.
Tianjin is already one of the most important locations in China for Vitesco. The company operates a plant here whose highly automated production lines enable it to manufacture large volumes. Series production of the fully integrated electric axle drive for PSA and Hyundai started here in October 2019. Electric vehicles from other manufacturers will follow in the course of the next few months. With compact, lightweight and powerful drive systems, Vitesco hopes to make e-mobility more affordable and thus more suitable for mass production.
The R&D disciplines of the new center include systems, software, electronics, mechanics, mechatronics and testing. At the same time, the integration of all R&D support functions is being planned. The new R&D center will work very closely with the existing R&D center in Shanghai.
Vitesco Technologies’ portfolio of electrification solutions includes 48-volt mild hybrid technologies as well as key components for hybrid and battery electric drives, such as power electronics, electric drives, battery management systems or charging solutions.
