Volkswagen, City of Hamburg develop innovative mobility models
Volkswagen CEO Matthias Müller and Olaf Scholz, First Mayor of Hamburg, signed an Agreement of understanding with the goal of establish Hamburg as a model city for the sustainable, integrated urban mobility. Elements of such a future-oriented mobility will be intermodality, traffic control and management, autonomous driving and parking, innovative vehicle concepts and alternative technologies as well as air pollution control.
The agreement between Hamburg and VW is the result of a dialogue between Hamburg’s senate and the Volkswagen group as well as the electromobility summit of Germany’s federal government that started more than a year ago. It reflects the changing customer requirements in the age of sharing economy and digitization, the partners said in a release. This change affects the municipal mobility infrastructure as well as the offerings from carmakers and transport companies likewise.
The goal of the agreement is developing and providing smart, customized mobility solutions that follow an integrated approach and include transport options for passengers and goods. Within the scope of the talks, the municipal Hamburg public transportation companies Hamburger Hochbahn AG and Verkehrsbetriebe Hamburg-Holstein have entered in an exchange of ideas with Volkswagen subsidiary MAN AG on the development of electric buses.
In this context, Volkswagen will launch multiple “Mobility Sharing” pilot projects with focus on micromobility, community cars and innovative urban logistics. Hamburg is also regarded as a potential test field for urban automated driving. Therefore, the partners will develop pilot projects that meet the requirements of the program for “Autonomous and Connected Driving in Digital Test Fields in Germany”, funded by the German federal government.
