Initially, the wallbox can be ordered in eight European countries (Finland, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland). The first boxes have already been delivered to customers these days. With its low introductory price (starting at 399 euros), Volkswagen intends to accelerate the rapid market penetration of electric mobility in the volume segment. According to Thomas Ulbrich, member of the Board of Management of the Volkswagen brand responsible for e-mobility, the company intends to set up a complete shop network around the ID.3 in the coming months. “The ID. Charger is the first step, further charging services will follow,” said Ulbrich. “In future, charging an e-car should be as simple and natural as charging a smartphone.”
The ID. Charger will gradually be available in three versions. All versions offer up to 11 kW charging power, a permanently attached type-2 charging cable and integrated DC residual current protection. The two top models, Charger Connect and Charger Pro, will be fully networked and can be controlled via smartphone. The functions of the associated app include monitoring charging processes, remote maintenance and access control via charging card. The model ID. Charger Pro model also offers an integrated electricity meter and enables, for example, the billing of electricity costs for company car drivers.
The basic version can already be ordered with optional installation in Volkswagen’s webshop, the ID. Charger Connect and ID. Charger Pro will follow soon.
The introduction of the chargers is part of Volkswagen’s e-mobility strategy to make the switch to the electric car attractive. Over the next ten years, almost 75 new e-models are to be launched across the Group. The first is the ID.3, the first car of the new ID. family.
In the medium term, the We Charge charging service is to give vehicle users access to around 150,000 public charging points throughout Europe. Through IONITY, Volkswagen is participating in the development of a Europe-wide quick charge network.
