A very silent motor with a peak power of 60 kW (82 hp) drives the vehicle to a maximum speed of 135 kmph. The motor offers a torque of 210 Nm already at extremely low revolution speed. The lithium-ion battery is integrated in the underfloor area of the vehicle; with a capacity of 18.7 kWh it provides a continuous power of 40 kW.

The charging port is located behind the same flap used in the conventional version of the vehicle to fill the tank. The car utilizes the Combined Charging System (CCS) which equally supports DC and AC charging – a detail that provides more independence with regard to charging stations. Within only 30 minutes, the battery can charged to 80 percent of its capacity, Volkswagen claims.

The integrated navigation system is optimized for the specific needs of an electric vehicle: It shows all charging stations in the environment – a feature that helps to resolve the "range angst" associated to electric vehicles with their short driving range. In addition, the navigation system takes the traffic situation in account for computing the driving range display. LED headlights help to reduce energy consumption.

The e-up! will make its debut at the Frankfurt International Auto Show in September. Subsequently Volkswagen plans to start delivery.
