The company plans to achieve this goal by offering at least two hybrid versions of every model in its product range. Volvo’s first all-electric vehicle is scheduled to hit the showrooms in 2019. Besides hybrid and battery electric powertrains the company is also doing R&D on fuel cell drives, but there are no plans (yet) to turn them into series products, a spokesperson said.

Volvo has been started to prepare itself for the emergence of electromobility already five years ago. Within the past years, the company has developed two vehicle architectures for larger and smaller cars on which all new vehicle designs will be based upon. These architectures are the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) and the Compact Modular Architecture (CMA). Both construction kits can be used for conventional, hybrid or fully electric powertrains. An all-electric vehicle can not yet be found not in Volvo’s product range.

The electrified car pledge is part of a wide ranging review of Volvo’s strategic sustainability program gives more emphasis to sustainability.
