VoxelSensors gathers more funds for XR sensing
VoxelSensors (Brussels, Belgium), a startup founded in March 2020, has added a €3 million tail investment to its seed round funding.
The tail investment was led by new investor SFPIM Relaunch for the Future with participation from existing investors Qbic Fund and finance&invest.brussels. The seed round was announced in May 2023 (see VoxelSensors raises seed funding for XR push).
The company has developed an active event sensor based on a CMOS image sensor used with a laser scanner. This is called the Switching Pixels Active Event Sensor (SPAES) and is 3D perception sensor applicable to extended reality (XR).
The SPAES provides an asynchronous and event-driven means of tracking an active light source or pattern. Instead of acquiring frames, each pixel within the sensor array only generates an event upon detecting active light signals. This keeps power consumption down to about 10mW and keeps the latency below 5ms, the company said.
The latest investment will be used for R&D, international growth and customer engagement for its technology which it now describes as Spatial and Empathic Computing for mobile and XR devices, the company said. It added it would also use the funds to prepare for a Series A round of equity finance.
“We think that Spatial and Empathic Computing is the future of XR and mobile technology, and we are happy to be among the pioneers of this field,” said Johannes Peeters, CEO of VoxelSensors, in a statement.
Investor SFPIM Relaunch for the Future is a subsidiary of the Federal Holding and Investment Company (SFPIM), which is Belgium’s sovereign wealth fund. The main objective of SFPIM Relaunch for the Future is anchoring digital technological expertise in Belgium.
VoxelSensors has previously announced a strategic partnership with OQmented GmbH (Itzehoe, Germany) to provide the laser scanning to complement the SPAES (see Startups VoxelSensors, OQmented team up for AR/VR/MR/XR).
