Method for improving battery life for Mobile Devices
In this paper, we intend to improve the battery life of a mobile device which is enabled with wireless communication technologies like 2G( GSM, GPRS, iDEN), 3G ( WCDMA ) or 4G( LTE, Wimax ). When the mobile station is in idle mode or stand by mode, it takes neighbor cell measurements along with serving cell measurements. These measurements (Received Signal Strength or RSS) are taken periodically at regular intervals. This is done so as to find the best suitable cell for camping and for reselection/handover. In this paper, we evaluate various scenarios where the neighbor cell measurements are taken by the mobile station can be optimized, especially when battery level goes below a predefined threshold. More specifically, we describe methods that can be used to optimize neighbor cell measurements under different circumstances, so as to reduce the power consumption by the mobile station Read More
