Scalable Testbench – Generating a Derivative from Breakthrough

In today’s fast evolving world, large scale SOCs often rely on reuse and derivative creation from a master breakthrough design to meet schedule and design goals. SOC verification teams often need to modify, fix or rewrite test cases to comply with varying number of instantiated IPs and VIPs (Verification IPs). A constrictive approach in the breakthrough phase may lead to difficulties creating derivatives due to the effort required in multiplying IPs. In the figure below derivative project B has three instances of IP A. In the testbench, this kind of multiplication creates a hidden cost - the derivative can’t use the breakthrough environment as is without complex code modification.
