The European space stock index launched today as a virtual tracker of European space-based tech companies that are currently listed on a stock market.
The index was developed in a partnership between the European Space Agency (ESA), the European Commission and Euronext, which operates regulated exchanges in Belgium, France, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway and Portugal, and aims to allow investors and people working in finance to monitor the financial performance of European space companies.
ESA and the commission worked with Promus Ventures in a dedicated expert group to analyse, monitor and identify companies involved within the Space sector.
The index includes key European semiconductor companies such as lithography equipment maker ASML and chip makers STMicroelectronics, Infineon Technologies and Nordic Semiconductor, as well as startups such as Arqit Quantum, Kleos Space and AAC Clyde Space and of course multinationals such as Thales, Airbus and BAe Systems as well as Meggit, Ultra Electronics and Rolls Royce.
The space-related companies can be categorized based on whether the services and goods they provide are “upstream” or “downstream” — though some companies do both.
Upstream companies design, manufacture and deploy space systems and their launch vehicles. That includes the design and delivery of hardware and software required in ground stations.
Downstream companies include operators that deliver communications, navigation and earth observation data as well as applications and solutions enabled by those signals to end-users and service providers.
End-users, such as purely telecommunications providers (e.g. orange/SFR) are excluded from the index. But companies for which at least 90% of their business is dependent on space capabilities (e.g. TomTom) are included.
