Wi-Fi Alliance starts certification scheme for Wi-Fi 6 market
The Samsung Galaxy Note10 and the Ruckus R750 are the world’s first smartphone and access point, respectively, certified as compliant to the Wi-Fi 6 standard.
The Wi-Fi 6 standard includes an enhanced multi-user MIMO channel scheme that allows up to 12 streams of upstream and downstream data on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands versus 4 downwards streams only in the previous iteration of the standard. It also adopts orthogonal frequency domain multiple access (OFDMA) encoding for improved network efficiency and lower latency. The use of 160 MHz bandawidth data channels delivers greater performance with low latency.
The 1024-QAM coding scheme increases throughput in Wi-Fi devices by encoding more data in the same amount of spectrum the standard also supports transmit beamforming to enable higher data rates at a given range resulting in greater network capacity
“Wi-Fi CERTIFIED 6 is ushering in a new era of Wi-Fi, building on Wi-Fi’s core characteristics to provide better performance in every environment for users, greater network capacity for service providers to improve coverage for their customers, and new opportunities for advanced applications,” said Edgar Figueroa, CEO of the Wi-Fi Alliance, in a statement.
Wi-Fi 6 includes enhanced security protocols under the WPA3 and WPA3-Personal schemes. It remains optional for now will become required over time as market adoption grows, Wi-Fi Alliance said.
“It’s so exciting to see the initiation of the Wi-Fi 6 certification process, which really serves as the kick-off to making this technology a market reality,” said Commissioner Michael O’Rielly of the US Federal Communications Commission.
