Wind River shows ECU consolidation, smartphone integration
A major topic these days is ECU consolidation. To keep the growing number of electronic control units at bay, OEMs tend to combine the functionality of multiple ECUs in one hardware platform, utilising virtualisation techniques to separate the disparate environments reliably. At NAIAS, Wind River showcases approaches and solutions supporting designers in the task of ECU consolidation through the example of a digital cluster display that highlights cost, weight, and power efficiency along with reduced complexity through shifting integration efforts from hardware to the software level.
The company’s demonstrations also include its infotainment platform, a Genivi 5.0 compliant in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) software platform based on Linux derivate Yocto that aims at facilitating the implementation of rich IVI systems. But Yocto is not alone in the universe – Android is currently evolving as a strong competitor. To address Android-oriented OEMs and tier ones. the company also showcases a customisable IVI platform with advanced connectivity and multimedia capabilities known from the typical smartphone. They include hotspot / tethering functionality and connection to cloud-based services, HD video reproduction and multi-touch display. Wind river also demonstrates a set of middleware tools to integrate smartphones into the car – not only the ones that run Android but also iPhones and even Windows-based handsets.
