·       The HiPEAC Technology Transfer Awards celebrate examples of leading-edge technology research results reaching the market.

·       Examples include technology licensing, providing dedicated services to a company, the creation of a new company, and creating a marketable solution in response to specific company’s needs.

·       This year, five technologies have been transferred, from tools that speed up processor development to embedded cybersecurity services.

A biodiversity monitoring start-up, accelerated machine learning for neurology research and pre-fabrication validation of next-generation processor designs are examples of the academia-developed, industry-ready results in this year’s HiPEAC Technology Transfer Awards. This year, all award winners will be recognized during a ceremony at the HiPEAC conference, which takes place in Munich in January. First-time award winners also receive a cash prize of €1,000.

‘There is huge potential for disruptive innovations within the HiPEAC community. These awards are aimed at inspiring others with exceptional results that have made the leap out of the lab,’ says HiPEAC coordinator Koen De Bosschere (Ghent University). ‘By transferring their research to industry, these HiPEAC members have ensured that their work has a tangible impact on society.’

The HiPEAC Technology Transfer Awards were launched in 2012 with the aim of encouraging members to transform their research outputs into industry-ready results. Examples of concrete activities which demonstrate tech transfer include:

  • technology licensing
  • providing dedicated services to an existing company
  • creation of a new company
  • creating a marketable solution in direct response to the needs of a specific company

This year’s five award-winning candidates are as follows:

  • FPGA-Shell: Rapid Emulation of RISC-V Designs on FPGAs – Behzad Salami, Barcelona Supercomputing Center, Spain
  • Enhancing Pavlovian-training experiments with GPU-accelerated machine learning – Christos Strydis, Erasmus Medical Center, Netherlands
  • ORBIK Cybersecurity: A cybersecurity spinoff for equipment manufacturers – Salvador Trujillo, ORBIK Cybersecurity, Spain
  • Empowering next-generation processor design: EDA tools for faster time-to-market – Lennart Michael Reimann, RWTH Aachen, Germany
  • BiodAIverse: Smart conservation technologies – Jorge Fernandez-Berni, Seville Institute of Microelectronics (IMSE-CNM), Spain
