Witricity teams with TI for automotive wireless charging reference design
WiTricity’s DRIVE 11 design uses it’s TMN (Tunable Matching Network) Controller with TI’s C2000 real-time control microcontroller (MCU) in electric vehicles and charging stations. This automatically optimises energy transfer between the source and vehicle in a wide range of real-world operating conditions including parking misalignment, differing vehicle ground clearance and varying battery voltage conditions.
The TMN magnetic resonance controller is delivered as a compact electronics module with proprietary hardware and software algorithms rated at 11 kW, 7.7 kW and 3.7 kW that is incorporated into both the wireless charging source on the ground and the wireless power capture device on the vehicle. Witricity worked with Nissan on a 7.7 kW system with TMN technology for testing as both a stand-alone system and interoperating with systems provided by other suppliers. This has demonstrated end-to-end efficiency of 91%-94%.
“New automotive technologies, such as wireless charging, are entering the market at a rapid pace,” said Alex Gruzen, CEO of WiTricity. “TI has been enabling innovation for decades and working with them to deliver robust WiTricity automotive-grade silicon will give carmakers and Tier 1 suppliers confidence to deploy complete wireless charging solutions.”
Witricity has announced licensing agreements with Toyota, Delphi, TDK, IHI, Shindengen, Daihen and BRUSA, and the company is also working directly with leading carmakers on global standards for wireless charging systems.
