World’s first analog-based power management controller with integrated MCU delivers flexible, efficient power conversion

The MCP19111 digitally enhanced power analog family operates across a wide voltage range of 4.5 to 32 V and offers an increase in flexibility compared with conventional analog-based solutions.  The device offers the world’s first hybrid, mixed-signal power-management controller, integrating an analog-based PWM controller with a fully functional Flash-based microcontroller. 

Microchip’s new single-chip solution aims to reduce design complexity,  component count, and footprint.  The device’s integration capabilities are claimed to enable a greater degree of configurability.

To support the new power analog controller Microchip is also extending the company’s high-speed MOSFET family, with the new MCP87018, MCP87030, MCP87090 and MCP87130.  Rated at 25 V, the 1.8 mΩ, 3 mΩ, 9 mΩ and 13 mΩ logic-level MOSFETs are optimized for Switched-Mode-Power-Supply (SMPS) applications.  

The combination of the MCP19111 digitally enhanced power analog controller, a new hybrid, digital and analog power-management device, and the expanded MCP87XXX family of low-Figure-of-Merit (FOM) MOSFETs, supports configurable, high-efficiency DC/DC power-conversion designs for a broad array of consumer and industrial applications.

The integration offers the flexibility of a digital solution, with the speed, performance and resolution of an analog-based controller.  The MCP19111 devices support operation up to 32 V, and have integrated MOSFET drivers configured for synchronous, step-down applications.  When combined with Microchip’s expanded family of high-speed MOSFETs, the MCP19111 drives customisable, high-efficiency power conversion.

Advanced featuresof the MCP19111 include a fully programmable MCU which  enables design engineers to optimize custom IP capabilities.  Other features include configurable analog capabilities and an I2C communication interface which is PMBus compliant.

"It is a single-chip solution," explained Stephen Stella, Microchip’s Product Marketing Manager Analog & Interface Products.  "We have a high-voltage, Flash-capable process that enables the microcontroller.  It also enables cost-efficient analog while enabling a high-voltage device (more than 5 V).  From an industry standpoint it probably is regarded as operating in a mid-voltage type range operating across  4.5 V to 32 V.  When we remove the high-performance MCU and we remove the  high-performance ADC we can now stay in an analog type process that allows us to integrate.  So we can integrate with the LDO and that is what gets us our mid-voltage capability but we can also integrate the power MOSFET drivers as well".  

"We have the 8-bit MCU and we also have the analog controller with an integrated MOSFET driver and an integrated LDO.  The device offers the fully programmable MCU core and the reason for that is because it enables the custom IP integration that our customers told us they were looking for," said Stella. "The digitally enhanced power analog controller solution is packaged on a monolithic chip in a 5 x 5 mm QFN package.  From a device standpoint this is as small or smaller than any similar competitive devices.  However, I have not seen any hybrid type devices that allow custom IP code support which is why this is an industry first."

The MCP19111 Evaluation Board (ADM00397) is offered with standard firmware, which is user-configurable through an MPLAB X IDE Graphical User Interface (GUI) plug-in.  The combined evaluation board, GUI and firmware allow power-supply designers to configure and evaluate the performance of the MCP19111 for their target applications.

Availability and Pricing

The MCP19111 digitally enhanced power analog controller is available now for sampling and is in volume production.

The MCP19111 is packaged in a 5×5 mm 28-pin QFN and is priced at $2.81 per 5000 units.

The MCP87030/090/130/018 Power MOSFETs are available now for sampling and volume production, with the exception of the MCP87018 which has expected availability in February 2013.

The MCP87030 and MCP87018 MOSFETs are offered in a 5×6 mm, 8-pin PDFN package.  The MCP87090 and MCP87130 MOSFETs are offered in both a 5×6 mm, 8-pin PDFN package, as well as a 3.3×3.3 mm, 8-pin PDFN package.

The MCP19111 Evaluation Board (ADM00397), priced at $49.99, also includes Microchip’s high-speed MOSFETs and is available now.
