Morse Micro has developed the world’s first router that combines WiFi 4 (802.11n) with the long range HaLow standard and is planning a European version.

The $99 HaLowLink 1 gateway has been certified by Wi-Fi Alliance and FCC, IC, and RCM for the Internet of Things. The HaLow standard enables WiFi links in sub-GHz bands at distances of 3km in urban areas and 16km in rural areas.

The gateway is based on the Morse MM6108 chips alongside the Mediatek MT7621A dual-core CPU and MT7603E 2×2 Wi-Fi 4 chipset for integration with legacy WiFi devices. This supports  WiFi 4 speeds of up to 300Mbps at 40MHz bandwidth and WiFi HaLow speeds of 32Mbps at 8MHz bandwidth.

There is already a gateway for pure HaLow developed by PureRF.

“The certification of the HaLowLink 1 reinforces the growing importance of reliable, interoperable Wi-Fi HaLow products in the connectivity ecosystem,” said Maureen Gallagher, VP of Marketing at Wi-Fi Alliance. “With its extended range and low-power capabilities, Wi-Fi HaLow is a powerful solution for IoT applications, and Morse Micro is committed to accelerating adoption by delivering high-quality products through the Wi-Fi CERTIFIED® program.”

The gateway can be used as an access point to create HaLow networks at 900MHz in the US as well as providing connectivity for existing 2.4 GHz WiFi 4, Ethernet and Ethernet-over-USB devices. In the central network, an additional gateway can be uses as an extender to provide 2.4GHz WiFi and Ethernet connectivity to devices in difficult to reach locations and link them over WiFi HaLow back to the central network.

Two gateways can also be used to replace Ethernet cabling in harsh environments.

“With the launch of the world’s first Wi-Fi 4 and Wi-Fi HaLow CERTIFIED gateway, we’re equipping developers with a powerful tool to explore the extended-range, low-power connectivity benefits of Wi-Fi HaLow, paving the way for widespread adoption,” said Michael De Nil, co-founder and CEO of Morse Micro.

The router is now certified for operation in North America (FCC), Canada (IC), and Australia (RCM), ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. While not yet available in other regions, Morse Micro has confirmed that certification efforts are underway to bring variants to the EMEA market at 868MHz as well as the Asia market in the near future.

The Wi-Fi 4 and Wi-Fi HaLow CERTIFIED gateway is available now for $99 on Mouser, providing developers and enterprises with an affordable and powerful solution to explore the technology.

The HaLowLink 1 can be purchased directly from Mouser
