LiFi is a 5G technology which aims to unlock the Internet-of-Things and provide secure wireless communications in Industry 4.0 applications.
The LiFi-X comprises an access point that connects to any LED light, as well as a business card sized dongle that can be operated from any USB 2.0 enabled mobile device – providing a level of user experience that claims to be comparable and more secure than existing wireless technologies such as Wi-Fi.
LiFi-X enables dense 5G and beyond indoor and outdoor wireless networks and is key to unlocking 100 times higher data rates for future mobile users. The immediate future of pureLiFi products is incorporation into smart-devices and -homes through LiFi microchips.
"The LiFi-X is a key step in the future of wireless communications. The product shows the tremendous progress pureLiFi has made over the last 12 months to create a fully USB 2.0 powered dongle that is smaller than a credit card and can be used with tablets. Looking forward, the LiFi-X will provide a state-of-the-art basis for future LiFi products with our partners," explained Harald Burchardt, COO of pureLiFi.
"The miniaturisation and world’s first integration of high-performance LiFi in a dongle is ground-breaking progress towards a LiFi connected world. We have witnessed rumors that Apple is investigating ‘LiFi-Capabilities’ in their latest iOS 9.0. I am excited that we have exceeded our technical roadmap, and with LiFi-X we can develop large-scale pilots. We now have a rail-track technology for the lighting industry to develop exciting and new business models around light as a service (LaaS)," said Prof. Harald Haas, CEO of pureLiFi.
pureLiFi (formerly known as pureVLC) is a light communications technology company formed in 2012 as a spin-out from the University of Edinburgh to create OEM components, including LiFi drivers and receivers. The company closed a $2 million funding round in December 2015 to support continued commercial growth and product development.
