The 100 megawattt/129 MWh system is being built at Jamestown in Australia alongside Neoen’s wind farm. The lithium ion PowerPacks are built at Tesla’s gigafactory in Nevada in the US.
The design uses five PowerPacks per MWh of energy generation, combining several hundred PowerPack towers that each contain 16 individual battery pods. It will provide energy to power 30,000 homes for eight hours, or 60,000 homes for four hours.
“The world’s largest lithium ion battery will be an important part of our energy mix, and it sends the clearest message that South Australia will be a leader renewable energy with battery storage,” said Australian Premier Jay Weatherill.
