
World’s longest Wi-Fi HaLow link reaches 3km
Morse Micro has demonstrated the world’s first live link over 3km using a sub-GHz HaLoW Wi-Fi technology.
The record-setting field test of a long-range Wi -Fi HaLoW link across San Francisco’s Ocean Beach neighbourhood carried a video call in real world conditions. The link bandwidth varied from 11Mbit/s at 500m to 1Mbit/s at 3km, but still supported the video call.
HaLoW is a low-power, long-reach version of Wi-Fi based on the IEEE 802.11ah standard with 10x the range, 100x the coverage area, and 1000x the volume of traditional Wi-Fi technologies that operate in the 2.4GHz, 5GHz and 6GHz bands.
This uses the sub-GHz spectrum with narrow frequency bands, enabling the technology to penetrate obstacles, even in noisy environments crowded with numerous connected devices and cameras. Wi-Fi HaLow not only increases wireless range; it also extends battery life with its power-saving features.

The demonstration is key for the target application of security video which can be challenging to implement in sub-GHz bands that support lower data rates than traditional W-Fi.

Morse Micro sampling its Wi-Fi Alliance and FCC-certified MM6108 production silicon for HaLow. This is used across an extensive ecosystem of module partners and ODMs and is seeing significant traction in infrastructure applications and IoT devices, including indoor and outdoor IP security cameras and dual-mode Wi-Fi access points.
