Passives, electromechanical components and PCB supplier Würth Elektronik officially opened its High-Tech Innovation Centre (HIC) in the Freiham suburb of Munich on April 3, 2023.
The site is chartered with enabling partnerships with customers, research institutions, startups and semiconductor manufacturers.
The facility has 10,770 square meters of floor space for the research into wireless connectivity, sensors, power modules, optoelectronics, power transformers and custom inductors, design and development kits. The facility supports education through seminar and cooperation with the Technical University of Munich. At the heart of the HIC is a test facility with two EMC test chambers in which electromagnetic compatibility can be tested.
The HIC has room to accommodate 250 employees and at present 160 expert engineers from 29 nations work there. It also is configured for expansion with a second construction phase set to create another 250 jobs, the company said.
The Würth Group had sales of almost €20 billion in 2022 and the HIC was opened by 87 year-old Professor Reinhold Würth, chairman of the supervisory board of the Würth Group’s Family Trusts.
Bavaria’s Minister of State for Finance and Home Affairs, Albert Füracker, stated in his address: “The Würth Group has developed from a small two-person outfit into a major global corporation with over 85,000 employees and has always remained a family business – a truly impressive story. Family businesses think in generations, not quarters. This success story is set to continue with the new Innovation Center in Freiham.”
