Smartphone maker Xiamoi is aiming to take on Porsche and Tesla in the electric car business as it officially launches its first vehicle.
Like contract manufacturer Foxconn, Xiaomi says it has recognised the importance of electronics in differentiating the design and performance of electric vehicles particularly for autonomous driving. The company’s HyperOS operating system is key to the development.
It is working with Chinese car maker BAIC to produce the SU7 in a plant in Beijing with a capacity of 200,000 vehicles a year.
“By working hard over the next 15 to 20 years, we will become one of the world’s top 5 automakers, striving to lift China’s overall automobile industry,” said Lei Jun, CEO of Xiaomi (above) at the launch yesterday.
