The running shoes feature motion sensors and a Bluetooth chip that will allow them to connect with a mobile device for fitness tracking purposes. The shoes are said to be able to track distance, number of steps taken, calories burned, and "other fitness functions" – similar to other wearable fitness tracking products.

The sensors will be supplied by Xiaomi’s wearable tech partner, Huami, and are said to be military grade. According to the company, the sensors, which are installed within the shoe’s sole, are expected to last for more than a year.

The shoes themselves are claimed to be waterproof, sweatproof, and able to withstand the rigors of running. In addition to a $32 version, which is based on an existing style shoe adapted to accommodate the electronics, there will be a newly designed version that will sell for $65. The smart shoes will officially go on sale starting July 20 in China.
