As one of the goals goal, the partners plan to integrate Imec’s hyperspectral imaging sensor with Ximea’s compact xiQ cameras, resulting in what they claim to be the world’s smallest hyperspectral camera system. The small form factor and low weight of the system could open up new market and application opportunities. "It will bring this technology into the hands of drone and UAVs companies that want to fly compact multispectral and hyperspectral imaging cameras to serve the emerging precision farming industry”, explained Jerome Baron, Business development manager of Imec’s imaging activities.

The high-speed USB3.0 interface includes power supply over USB which removes the need for expensive and bulky frame-grabbers and separate power supplies, enabling customers to design and mass-produce extremely compact hyperspectral imaging camera solutions, the companies promise.

By applying narrow-band spectral filters at pixel-level using semiconductor thin-film processing, imec’s technology enables very compact hyperspectral image sensor solutions with low weight, and proven capabilities to be mass produced at low cost in volume. Three types of standard spectral image sensor designs are today available: 100 bands linescan design, 32 bands snapshot tiled design, and a new snapshot mosaic designs featuring 16 bands in a matrix of 4×4 per-pixel filters.

Ximea coupled Imec’s hyperspectral sensors to its xiQ camera product line which results in a camera with exceptional small form factor – the device measures just 26.4 x 26.4 x 21.6 mm and weighs only 27 grams. The secret of this compact footprint is a single planar rigid printed circuit board as opposed to competing multi-board and multifold flexi-rigid PCB constructions. The power consumption is equally low and suits the power management design challenges of UAVs: The camera does it with juts 1.8 Watts.
