xMEMS Lab announces silicon speaker in production
The Montara is a six-cell, piezoMEMS speaker that its developer claims is the world’s first true MEMS speaker. Other players in this field – such as USound GmbH might disagree (see ST, USound demo MEMS-based speakers in headphones).
The Montara includes both the actuation and diaphragm in piezoelectric MEMS silicon and comes with a companion piezo audio driver IC called Aptos. xMEMS Labs has a design win with Inventec Appliances Corp. in their Chiline TR-X earbuds, due to go on sale in March 2022.
The all silicon design of the microspeaker provides for low group delay and phase shift, minimizing the need for calibration and speaker matching.
The 1mm profile, SMT-ready package and IP58 rating for dust/water simplify system design, integration, and assembly. Montara is qualified to both IEC, and the more stringent JEDEC standards for improved quality and reliability.
“We are pleased to have TSMC as our strategic foundry partner and value the collaboration commercializing our true MEMS speakers with their advanced MEMS technology,” said Joseph Jiang, xMEMS co-founder and CEO, in a statement.
