The VirtualZero technology used in Dialog’s IoT WiFi chip enables such a low level of power consumption that even continuously connected devices can typically achieve at least a year of battery life, up to five years, according to the company. The SoC uses an algorithm-driven design to provide the lowest power solution for facilitating an extended battery life, while also maintaining a continuous WiFi connection to ensure that end users always maintain control of their devices.

The highly integrated DA16200 runs the entire WiFi system, security and networking protocol stack, eliminating the need for an external network processor, CPU or microcontroller. It contains an 802.11b/g/n radio (PHY), baseband processor, MAC, on-chip memory, dedicated encryption engine and an ARM Cortex-M4F host networking applications processor, all on a monolithic silicon die.

The power management in the DA16200 has one internal DC-DC converter and several LDOs for supplying power to all internal sub-blocks. Power management handles the on-off control of these regulators and it is implemented through the register setting inside the RTC block. This shuts down every element of the chip that is not in use, which allows a near zero level of power consumption when not actively transmitting or receiving data. The SoC also enables ultra-low power transmitting and receiving modes when the SoC needs to be awake to exchange information with other devices. Advanced algorithms enable staying asleep until the exact moment required to wake up to transmit or receive. 

The SoC is built from the ground up for the IoT and is aimed at door locks, thermostats, sensors, pet trackers, asset trackers, sprinkler systems, connected lighting, video cameras, video door bells, wearables and other IoT WiFi devices. 

To achieve extended range without compromising battery life, the DA16200 also features an integrated power amplifier (PA) and low-noise amplifier (LNA), offering users industry-leading output power and receiver sensitivity.

Alongside the SoC, Dialog is also launching two DA16200-based IoT WiFi modules that deliver flexibility and design options for implementing Wi-Fi simply and easily, ensuring all customers can benefit from the SoC’s high level of integration and programmable ease of use. Both modules include 4MB flash memory and all required RF components, including a crystal oscillator, RF-lumped filter and either a chip antenna or a u.FL connector for an external antenna.

The IoT WiFi modules are fully certified for worldwide operation, including certifications for FCC, IC, CE, Telec, Korea and SRRC. Additionally, both the SoC and modules are WiFi Certified for interoperability.
