ZF bundles electromobility activities

The move demonstrates how seriously the supplier of transmissions, undercarriages and brake systems as well as – through the recent acquisition of TRW – driver assistance systems is taking the transition from conventional powertrains to electrical ones. “Electromobility is the technology of the future”, said ZF CEO Stefan Sommer. “The current debate on car emissions may even speed its acceptance.”

Currently the group’s activities in the electromobility business are scattered across multiple organisation units. The new Electromobility Division, to be based in Schweinfurt (Germany) will complement the existing divisions Passenger Vehicle Drives, Commercial Vehicles Technology and Industrial Technology as well as the recently launched division Active and Passive Safety in which TRW’s activities are being continued. The core of the new division are the organisational units Electronic Systems and Electrical Drive Technology plus the company’s E-Mobility project centre.

At the same time the company has announced to move its existing conventional shock absorbers production from Schweinfurt and two minor locations to Levice (Slovakia) and Gebze (Turkey) where the company already maintains manufacturing locations. The reason is the price pressure, the company said. More sophisticated electronically controlled shock absorbers will continue to be manufactured in Germany as well as at various eastern European sites.
