
In dense city traffic, a car turns from the main street into a busy side street. A pedestrian crosses the road shortly after a visible intersection with poor visibility and is overlooked by the driver: This is a typical dangerous situation that occurs daily in today’s city traffic – but is not recognized by today’s driver assistance systems. ZF’s new automatic emergency brake assistant, in contrast, identifies the situation correctly and brakes the car to a standstill. For this function, ZF combines two front corner radars, a front camera, and the electronically controlled brake system. With the fused camera and radar signals, the car can also reliably detect a pedestrian crossing when making a turn. The ZF braking system then ensures that the vehicle comes to a safe standstill. This emergency braking function fulfills the criteria of Euro NCAP 2020, the company said.
Everyone is familiar with this highway situation as well: Red brake lights light up behind the bend and the end of the traffic jam is dangerously close. If you don’t react correctly here in fractions of a second, you’ll quickly hit the end of the traffic jam. ZF’s driver assistance function “Automated Collision Avoidance” (ACA) can recognize the danger situation and act accordingly, if the driver fails to do so.
In contrast to conventional emergency braking functions, this system can automatically switch to a free lane if there is insufficient space for emergency braking. If the distance to the end of the traffic jam is large enough, the assistance system stops the car with conventional emergency braking.
The automatic collision avoidance works up to a speed of 130 km/h. Here, ZF again is using the combination of multiple sensors and their fused signals: A front camera and a front radar detect the situation and trigger corresponding braking and steering signals. To protect the vehicle occupants, the system is combined with an automatic belt tensioner that warns the driver by vibrating and tightens the belt even before braking or steering intervention.
