Zhaga consortium to participate at Las Vegas Lightfair International
The Zhaga group fosters mechanical and electrical standards for so called light engines – a part of a luminary that contains the LED and all optical components. In the consortium, more than 100 member companies including industry heavyweights such as General Electric, Fairchild Semiconductor, Infineon, LG Electronics, Mitsubishi Electric Lighting, Osram, Panasonic, Philips, Sharp and Seoul Semiconductors support the idea of creating specifications that make light engines interchangeable.
At the Light + Building trade fair in April, more than 30 companies for the first time rolled out Zhaga-compliant light engine designs. The Zhaga appearance in Frankfurt was a big success, says Annette Kelso, Marketing Manager at Philips. "The majority of European light manufacturers were particularly excited to witness the initial implementations of the six Zhaga specifications that currently exist. Designers and distributors, on the other hand, wanted initial information on the initiative”, she explains.
The benefits for standardization the light engine are numerous. “Finally, luminaire manufacturers can now concentrate exclusively on the design and qualitative aspects of the LED luminaire. You can pursue long-term plans with a wide range of LED light sources in the secure knowledge that there will always be multiple supply sources," says Kelso. Besides the semiconductor industry, also component providers profit from the standard. "Zhaga helps us to drive standardization on lighting components such as LED holders, so luminaire makers do no longer need to redesign their luminaire when changing the LED.”, says Matthijs Peters, Industry Manager Lighting with Zhaga member Molex. “This reduces cost and risks, especially for smaller companies who therefore struggled to enter the LED market before.”
Even the industry organizations support the efforts of Zhaga to make the LED market more future-proof. According to Juergen Sturm, Secretary General of the European Lamp Companies Federation, the LED market is highly fragmented and rapidly changing. "Zhaga’s LED interface specifications meet the strong demand for clear guidelines and standardization." The industry association supports Zhaga since the initiative will be the key to a rapid, wide and sustainable dissemination of LED technology, Sturm affirmed.
The second leg of its information tour will take the Zhaga group to the Las Vegas Lightfair International. At the 170,000 square meter fairground, also more than ten Zhaga members will exhibit. The exhibition will take place from May 9 through May 11.
