Fins are machined from thin sheet metal and formed into custom shapes. These sheets are designed to interlock with very little space between layers. The fin assembly is wave-soldered to a metal base forming a rigid, lightweight heat sink.
ATS zipper-fin heat sinks enable the combined use of copper and aluminium materials: a copper base allows for optimal heat spreading, while aluminium fins minimise weight. Integral ducts can be added to contain and enhance cooling airflow. This improves thermal performance, particularly with active sinks that receive airflow from fans and blowers. For many of these configurations, the top surface of the heat sink can also be used as a heat spreader for hot components.
Building on the benefits of higher performance and lighter weight, the zipper-fin heat sinks are able to cool LEDs, as well as a multitude of hot components in telecommunication, data communication, military, and embedded electronic applications. A video is here.
