Folding outwards: Huawei Mate X’ AMOLED display
At Mobile World Congress, second largest smartphone maker after Samsung, Huawei too has unveiled a foldable smartphone, the Mate X, with an 8" 2200x2480 AMOLED display elegantly folding outwards.

Once closed, the phone still features a continuous display, from a 6.6" 1148x2480 pixel display on the front curving at the edge to reach a 6.38" 2480x892 display at the back where cameras are fitted. The Mate X includes 5G connectivity, a Kirin 980 octa-core chipset, 8 GB of RAM, 512 GB of storage, a NM memory slot and a quad camera setup with Leica optics and is expected to start shipping in Q2 2019 at the luxury price tag of USD 2,600 or about 30% more expensive than its direct inwards folding competitor.

The high price tag makes analysts wonder if such smartphones will truly help smartphone manufacturers give a boost to an already saturated and softening smartphone market, and if new applications enabled by the larger unfolded screen will really bring the traction needed to turn flexible displays as mainstream.
