The cooperation aims to further scale ride-sharing services based on self-driving vehicles in Germany and other European countries over the course of this decade. At the start of the service, Sixt plans to put 25 cars on the streets of Munich. However, the vehicles will not be fully autonomous - there will always be a safety driver on board. This corresponds to SAE level 4 of autonomous driving.
The sensors of the vehicles consist of cameras, lidar and radar sensors; the camera data on the one hand and the lidar and radar data on the other are to be pre-processed separately. The resulting environment data is fused by a powerful Mobileye computer, which is also responsible for the driving strategy.

Mobileye cooperates with the automotive supplier Schaeffler for the base vehicles. The latter has also announced a cooperation with Mobileye to build an autonomous vehicle. "In the partnership with Mobileye, we want to develop autonomous shuttles to series production readiness," explained Schaeffler's chief technology officer Matthias Zink. As part of this collaboration, Schaeffler's modular electric vehicle platform "Rolling Chassis" will be combined with Mobileye's Mobileye Drive control electronics. In this way, the duo aims to offer Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) and Transportation-as-a-Service (TaaS) solutions to its customers worldwide. "Mobileye Drive is a versatile, scalable self-driving solution that can fully automate any type of vehicle. Schaeffler's innovative vehicle platform, equipped with our Mobileye Drive system, will enable the widespread deployment of self-driving shuttles and other driverless transportation solutions beginning in the next two years," said Johann Jungwirth, vice president of mobility-as-a-service at Mobileye, at the IAA. According to Jungwirth, the Israeli company works with more than 25 OEMs worldwide and provides them with total solutions for environment recognition.
