Platform enables 5G sub-6GHz testing

With a new Communications Manufacturing Test Set, Rohde & Schwarz enables testing and validation of sub-6 GHz devices according to the global standardization collaboration specifications, 3GPP 5G New Radio (NR).

Devices meeting the 5G NR specs should support frequency ranges up to 52.6 GHz. However, the first 5G designs will use frequencies below 6 GHz with a focus on 3.5 GHz. For these sub-6 GHz carrier frequencies, 3GPP is currently talking about maximum bandwidths of 100 MHz per component carrier. The R&S CMW100 Communications Manufacturing Test Set with a measurement bandwidth of 160 MHz already enables testing of the first 5G NR Sub-6 GHz devices. With its high measuring speed, the R&S CMW100 is specially designed for mass production in production.

In addition to 5G NR Sub-6 GHz, the flexible test solution supports all relevant technologies such as LTE, WLAN and Bluetooth. This makes the R&S CMW100 a cost-optimized solution for mass production of all cellular and non-cellular (wireless connectivity) devices whose calibration and verification is performed in so-called non-signaling mode (analyzer/generator). End device manufacturers therefore have a wide range of measurement functions at their disposal - with only one investment in a single measurement device platform, one-time training and adaptation costs.

Anton Messmer, head of the mobile communications measurement department at Rohde & Schwarz, explains: "With the introduction of 5G, broader frequency ranges are being used. The use of bands below 6 GHz is the decisive factor for the construction of networks with reliable coverage. The R&S CMW100 shows that Rohde & Schwarz is equipped for 5G NR Sub-6 GHz”.

The latest 160 MHz version of the R&S CMW100 is now available from Rohde & Schwarz. Software options compatible with 5G NR Sub-6 GHz for vector signal analysis and generation will be available in 2018.
