Cambridge startup Porotech is working with Jade Bird Display in China to use porous gallium nitride (GaN) for higher resolution, brighter microLED displays in portable designs

UK microLED startup Porotech has teamed up with a major display maker in China for a new generation of materials

The spin out of the University of Cambridge is working with Jade Bird Display (JBD) in Shanghai, a leading maker of microLED displays. Porotech will supply its porous gallium nitride (GaN) technology for higher quality microdisplays for smartphones, smartwatches and VR/AR headsets. The brighter technology is particularly useful in outdoor settings, where sunlight can often make existing displays difficult to see clearly.

Last year, Porotech launched the world’s first commercial native red indium gallium nitride (InGaN) LED epiwafer for microLED applications. JBD now plans to use Porotech’s porous GaN templates to manufacture InGaN-based red micro-LED displays for use in applications such as VR/AR headsets, AR smart sports goggles and head-up displays.

“As a leader in micro-LED display technology, JBD can see the enormous potential of Porotech’s breakthrough – and we are keen to work with this revolutionary technology to create a new generation of microdisplays,” said Qiming Li, founder and CEO of Jade Bird.

The porous GaN approach fits into existing microLED production processes with a single additional step to produce red and green LEDs. Plessey in the UK is also working on a GaN-based process for microLED displays for smart glasses.

“This partnership will enable both JBD and Porotech to meet the demands of microLED displays in the future,” said Dr Tongtong Zhu, CEO and co-founder of Porotech. “MicroLED displays using GaN-based material technology are widely seen as the only technology that can deliver displays bright and efficient enough to meet the requirements of VR and AR. Our proprietary technology is robust but also flexible enough to be tailored to the needs of different applications.”
