Report: Apple in talks to buy Intel modem business
Apple is in talks about buying Intel's smartphone modem business, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal that referenced unnamed sources.

Apple could pay in excess of $1 billion to acquire the products, intellectual property and to take over staff contracts, the report said. The deal could be reached in the next week the report said.

It follows a strategic trend pursued by Apple where it has taken over the design of such things as application processors, graphics processors and power management ICs.

Intel announced it would pull out of the 5G modem market in April shortly after Apple announced the settlement of a dispute with modem supplier Qualcomm.
