In 2Q14 EDA industry revenue was $1.78 billion, up 6.3 percent over 2Q13 the group said based on statistics it collects from its members.

The semiconductor IP market, which grew 23 percent year-on-year was supported by increased spending on tools for the design of printed circuit boards and multi-chip modules, according to EDAC’s latest quarterly market figures. In geographic terms the Asia-Pacific and Americas regions led the way with market growth in excess of 10 percent year-on-year, but Japan continues to stagnate with spending on EDA tools falling year-on-year by 16 percent.

EDA industry revenue in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) with revenues of $290.4 million was up 3.5 percent compared to Q2 2013.

In terms of product categories, the largest, Computer Aided Engineering (CAE), generated revenue of $599.7 million in 2Q14, a 1.9 percent decrease compared to 2Q13. IC physical design and verification revenue decreased to $357.9 million, down 4.8 percent.

However, PCB and MCM tool revenue of $178.4 million in 2Q14 was up by 20.3 percent compared to 2Q13 and semiconductor intellectual property, at $532 million, showed a 23.2 percent increase compared to 2Q13. Services revenue was $89.9 million in Q2 2014, an increase of 4.3 percent compared to Q2 2013.

"Double-digit increases in PCB/MCM and semiconductor IP led the way to an overall increase in industry revenue for Q2," said Wally Rhines, board sponsor for the EDAC market statistics service and CEO of Mentor Graphics. "Geographically, all regions except Japan had solid revenue increases."

Companies that were tracked employed 31,259 professionals in Q2 2014, an increase of 6.7 percent compared to the 29,304 people employed in Q2 2013, and up 2.7 percent compared to Q1, 2014.
