 ST to supply SiC devices for e-cars from Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi
A decisive parameter for the market success of electric vehicles is their energy efficiency. This in turn depends crucially on the power semiconductors installed in the power train. Now the French semiconductor manufacturer STMicroelectronics has scored a points win over its competitors: The high-volume OEM alliance of Renault-Nissan and Mitsubishi has chosen ST as its supplier of SiC semiconductors for the on-board chargers (OBC) of the Group's future electric vehicles.

Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi intends to use the new SiC power technology to build more efficient and compact high-performance OBCs. These will help shorten charging times and increase range. ST will also provide design-in support to maximize the performance and reliability of the OBCs.

It is also intended that Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi will also source complementary components from ST, including standard silicon semiconductors. OBCs equipped with ST's SiC technology are expected to enter series production in 2021.

ST did not provide any information on the expected quantities.
