TSMC climbs US patents top ten
In 2018 IBM remained the top company for US patents granted, as it has been for many years, but TSMC climbed three places, according to the IFI Claims organization.

The number of patents granted by the US Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) declined in 2018 in total and by most geographies and product categories, but Asia continues to be a strong player.

The USPTO issued 308,853 Utility patents in 2018, a 3.5 percent decline from 2017's record year. US companies received 46 percent of these patents. Asian companies received 31 percent and European companies received 15 percent.

Chinese companies represent only 4 percent of 2018 US Grants, but their total of 12,589 US patents is an increase of 12 percent over 2017. All other countries declined.

The leading company, IBM, made a small gain in its number of patents granted while Samsung was essentially flat. Other leading companies including Canon, Intel, Qualcomm, Apple and Google all showed declines.  TSMC increased its number of patent awards and went from ninth ranked in 2017 to sixth ranked in 2018.
