German startup Xavveo has raised $8.6m in a seed round for its photonic 4D radar technology.

The distributed photonic radar sensors developed by Xavveo in Berlin can be used for selfdriving cars, industrial automation and healthcare.

The round was led by imec.xpand and Vsquared Ventures and the funding will be used to further develop its proprietary distributed radar system using integrated silicon photonic chips.

The distributed 4D radar sensors provide a 360-degree view of their surroundings, allowing self deriving vehicles to make real-time decisions and prevent accidents. The sensors have an angular resolution of under 0.1° similar to LiDaR laser sensors but can operate in harsh conditions such as fog or heavy rain.

“Autonomous vehicles represent one of the most complex engineering challenges of our time,” said Dr. Sven Otte, CEO of Xavveo. “Once fully deployed, AVs will democratize mobility and significantly reduce carbon emissions. We are thrilled to have Vsquared and imec.xpand, two funds with a lot of expertise in the deep tech sphere, on board.”

“We are thrilled to back Xavveo and their game-changing approach to autonomous driving,” commented Michael Jobst, Director Principal at Vsquared Ventures. “Their distributed photonic radar system is set to become a critical enabler of the future of mobility, and we believe they have the talent and vision to bring this to the forefront of the industry.”
