UK chip design house Aion Silicon (formerly Sondrel) has won a $12m project to develop a RISC-V accelerator for high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI) applications.

The project covers the full spectrum of design work from the complete RTL architecture and verification through Design for Test, physical implementation, and tape-out on a leading edge node using the RISC-V open instruction set architecture (ISA) with vector extensions to accelerate AI workloads.

Aion has moved from design services such as a recent ASIC contract for a video chip to offering full service chip supply, including working with the foundry. It has previously developed chips for

“The global HPC race demands accelerators that deliver extreme performance per watt,” said Oliver Jones, CEO of Aion Silicon. “This project shows how our team can turn bold RISC-V architectures into manufacturable silicon that challenges the dominance of proprietary solutions.”

A dedicated team of Aion Silicon engineers will work alongside the customer’s team to accelerate knowledge transfer and project velocity

Engineering work is under way, with additional hires planned through 2025 as the design moves toward tape-out and initial silicon.
