Analog Devices Inc. and steel-to-software conglomerate Tata Group have announced a strategic alliance to explore chip manufacturing cooperation in India.
Tata Electronics, Tata Motors and Tejas Networks signed a memorandum of understanding with ADI to explore business cooperation and explore the opportunities for semiconductor manufacturing operation in India and the use of ADI products in Tata Motor’s electric vehicles and Tejas’ networking infrastructure.
The companies also agree to have strategic roadmap alignment discussions.
No time-scales were put on the cooperation and no mention made of any implications for Analog Device’s own capital expenditure plans and chip manufacturing initiatives in the US and Europe. In Japan Analog Devices has said it will source chips from foundry TSMC’s joint venture fab called JASM.
Tata Electronics has committed to building a wafer fab in Dholera, Gujarat in partnership with Taiwan’s Power Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. (PSMC) with heavy government support. The fab in Dholera has an investment budget of US$11 billion and, in addition, the company plans to spend US$3 billion on a facility in Jagiroad, Assam for the assembly and testing of semiconductor chips.
ADI said it intends to explore opportunities to manufacture its products in Tata’s fab in Gujarat and packaging facility in Assam.
Tata Electronics is also planning building two additional fabs after the first fab comes into production in 2026.
