Black Semiconductor GmbH (Aachen, Germany) has acquired a fellow graphene startup  Applied Nanolayers  BV (Delft, The Netherlands) for an undisclosed sum of money.

Black Semiconductor, said the move would speed up the development of its Integrated Graphene Photonics (IGP) technology by two years. The Applied Nanolyers (ANL) team includes 10 materials experts with over 12 years of experience in graphene production and transfer. The acquisition combines Black Semiconductor’s expertise in chip architectures and photonic process technology with ANL’s specialized knowledge in graphene material production.

Founded in 2012 and now operating as Black Semiconductor Netherlands, the ANL team has been developing wafer-level graphene integration technology. The acquisition brings Black Semi a semi-automated 200mm process platform capable of producing 10,000 wafers per year, which will be scaled up to a fully automated 300mm process to reach over one million wafers per year.

The acquisition dovetails with Black Semiconductor’s move into FabONE, its 17,000 square meter manufacturing site. There the time table for production of graphene-based optoelectronic 300mm wafers starts with an operational pilot line in 2026 with a transition to volume production in 2029.

The IGP platform will deliver energy-efficient, high-speed data communication solutions in form of thousands of chips interconnected with low latency paving the way for advancements in AI, robotics, autonomous driving, and high-performance computing.

“This acquisition accelerates our technology development, and both teams are mutually excited about the transaction. We will provide the industry with an unbeatable integration of photonics and electronics at a very competitive cost and solve the fundamental performance problems of computer systems,” said Daniel Schall, co-founder and CEO of Black Semiconductor, in a statement.
