German embedded systems provider congatec has acquired a majority stake in the module businesses of larger rival Kontron, including module pioneer JUMPtec

The move highlights the shifts in the embedded industry and strengthens congatec’s global presence and market leadership in standardized Computer-on-Modules (COM).

The €100m deal for 96% of Deggendorf-based JUMPtec, the pioneer in standardized Computer-on-Modules, includes Kontron America Modules and Kontron Asia Embedded Design.

“The transaction marks an important milestone in our growth strategy and is the logical next step in our strategic partnership with Kontron,” said Dr. Dominik Ressing, CEO of congatec. The comany was bought by private equity firm XX with a strategy to grow through acquisitions.

Kontron has been moving away from being a hardware provider to systems and software, and the deal allows Kontron to use congatec’s portfolio for its own solution and system offerings.

“The cooperation bundles technological expertise and secures us access to high-performance modules in the long term,” says Hannes Niederhauser, CEO of Kontron. “At the same time, we are strengthening our production and expanding our range of embedded and system solutions.”

Based on the higher volumes from the deal, both Kontron and congatec anticipate cost advantages and will be able to actively manage tariff developments, especially in the USA, due to the production facilities of Kontron in North America. This development is the result of the strategy of congatec to follow a local-for-local approach to address the international trade disruptions and growing customer demand driven by geopolitical requirements.

Kontron uses its subsidiary Katek to manufacture modules at 21 sites around the world, offering local-for-local services across multiple industries, including medical, industrial automation, transportation, avionics, and defense. The Kontron group will provide Supply Chain Management, Production, and Logistics to congatec.

Congatec says it will continue JUMPtec’s existing product range and inventory of COM-HPC, COM Express, SMARC and Qseven modules. For JUMPtec customers, all existing business relationships will remain unchanged, ensuring continued, reliable product supply.

The deal means JUMPtec module users can now use the congatec its aReady portfolio of application-ready software building blocks on compatible modules. This gives customers direct access to congatec’s aReady.VT hypervisor technology and aReady.IOT software as well as the option for Canonical’s Ubuntu Pro operating system or Bosch Rexroth’s ctrlX OS pre-installed, configured and licensed on their modules.

After many years of being competitors in the module and board market, the two companies had agreed established production and engineering cooperation in May 2025

“By joining forces with JUMPtec, we gain valuable expertise, experienced specialists, and a complementary product portfolio. This enables us to streamline development and accelerate innovation. Module customers worldwide will benefit from this through cutting-edge products, a broader selection, and faster access to new technologies,” said Konrad Garhammer, CTO and COO of the congatec Group.

“This reinforces our position as a leading provider of embedded and edge computing technologies, while specifically strengthening our portfolio and development capabilities,” said Ressing. “This puts us in an even better position to deliver innovative, application-ready high-performance ecosystems more quickly – from standalone modules, optimized cooling solutions, and carrier boards to design-in and test services, as well as customized aReady.COM solution platforms. This offers clear advantages to all JUMPtec and congatec customers and provides compelling reasons for those not yet using our COMs to make the switch.”

congatec is also one of the leading suppliers of SMARC modules, and the SGET Standardization Group has released version 2.2 of its SMARC Design Guide.

The Design Guide provides essential support for hardware developers and system architects by offering detailed implementation recommendations and layout best practices for SMARC-based carrier boards. It can be used by SGET members and non-members to create carrier boards based on the standard and design guide. The revision ensures full alignment with the latest specification and addresses several frequently discussed design topics from the developer community.

This clarifies guidelines for console usage on serial ports as well as an updated USB Type-C reference schematic. There are also improved recommendations for SD card and GPIO integration with refined layout suggestions to support higher Ethernet speeds
