Huawei pushes ahead with €200m factory in France

Despite security concerns across Europe, Huawei is pushing forward with plans to build its first overseas factory in northern France.
The €200m Huawei plant in Brumath in Bas-Rhin will manufacture equipment for the European market, said Minggang Zhang, the Deputy General Manager of Huawei France in a radio interview.
This includes smart watches and ear buds and is planning to start manufacturing 5G equipment in 2025. The plant will start with 300 staff, rising to 500 people.

The plant was initially announced in 2020 to build mobile phone network equipment. However Zhang said the plant was expecting to make a billion items a year, implying more consumer manufacturing. It is also unlikely to be making smartphones at the plant.
Since the plant was announced, Huawei has faced restrictions on its equipment in networks in the UK, France and Germany with governments citing national security concerns.
