Leoni realigns cable division

Business news |
By Christoph Hammerschmidt

Following the takeover by Austrian investor Stefan Pierer and the change of CEO, cable manufacturer Leoni is giving its most important cable harness division a new direction: under the new name Charging & Power Solutions Business Unit, the CPS BU will in future focus more on cable solutions for electromobility.

The business of Leoni’s CPS BU already includes the development of charging cables for electric cars. The product portfolio of the EcoSense brand family covers all conductive charging types relevant on the market. This includes single-phase AC charging for house connection, three-phase AC charging for house connection and public charging stations, as well as DC and HPC charging for fast charging systems. Approvals have already been obtained for the European, American, Japanese and Chinese markets, says the company, which recently came within a hair’s breadth of bankruptcy.

Now Leoni intends to add liquid-cooled systems for fast charging (High Power Charging cables HPC) to its product range. These systems make it possible to regulate the temperature of the charging system despite high charging currents and to shorten the vehicle charging process.

Rapid developments without loss of quality thanks to simulation

During development, Leoni makes use of its own simulation and testing department. Already at an early stage of development, the components are designed virtually and then tested under real conditions in close cooperation with the customers. In the process, a large number of measured values are processed in a central measuring system. These findings flow directly into further product development and are intended to benefit product quality and safety.

The EcoSense charging cables are manufactured at locations in Germany, Poland, China and Mexico. Due to the rapidly growing demand for cables for electromobility, Leoni has continued to expand its production capacities in all regions in recent years. Most recently, the company expanded its production area at the site in Cuauhtémoc, Mexico by more than 40% in 2022. This was the second expansion since 2020, with investments of around USD 25 million in machinery for the production of automotive power cables and charging systems. Over the next five years, Leoni will invest in further production facilities worldwide to meet demand.

Michael Walz, Director Sales & Product Management comments on the realignment: “The demand for our electric charging solutions is so great that we have realigned the focus of our development work. In addition to production capacities, we have also built up resources on the development and sales side, so that with our international network we are ideally equipped for further growth. The new name “Charging & Power Solutions” now also outwardly reflects the changes of the past years.”
