Moore Threads raises funds for more GPUs
Moore Threads Technology Co. Ltd. (Beijing, China), a 2020 graphics and artificial intelligence startup, has raised CNY1.5 billion (about US$215 million) in Series B funding, according to Digitimes.
Moore Threads, founded by James Zhang, previously a vice president and general manager at Nvidia, is being positioned as a Chinese GPU player to compete with Nvidia, which is reckoned to have about 80 percent of the Chinese GPU/AI market.
The company raised $300 million in a Series A round of finance in December 2021 on top of “hundreds of millions of dollars” of previously-raised seed funding. The company has released at least two GPUs and a series of graphics cards based on these.
The chips have reportedly been implemented in 7nm manufacturing process, which gives rise to questions over where Moore Threads will be able to source manufacturing in the long term.
