Amphenol and Semtech have demonstrated an active copper cable assembly that can handle data rates of 1.6Tbit/s for datacentre applications.
This kind of speed has previously required fibreoptic cables that can be costly and use more power with the high performance DSP chips. 800G active copper cables (ACC) were demonstrated in 2024 and the technology for the next generation 1.6T systems
The 1.6T Octal Small Form-factor Pluggable (PSFP) active copper cable developed by Amphenol uses Semtech’s CopperEdge 224G/lane linear equalizer/redriver ICs and cuts power consumption by 90% compared to versions using a DSP, says Semtech.
This reduces the thermal design requirements and cuts operating costs. OSFP is a format for high-density, hot-pluggable transceiver modules designed for 400G and 800G and now can be used for 1.6T data rates with a cable latency of below 100ps.
The cable has simple configuration and control and is compliant with auto-negotiation and link training for easier management and link bring up.

The dramatic growth in datacentre deployments planned for AI applications and workloads is driving requirements for ever higher-bandwidth interconnect solutions between compute and storage resources in clusters. The active copper cable is designed for use with switches and accelerator boards that run at 200G/lane and provides the extended reach required to connect adjacent equipment racks.
“We expect deployment of 224G/lane data centre infrastructure starting in 2025 and ramping rapidly over the coming years, as AIL applications continue to push the envelope on performance and interconnect bandwidth,” said Bob Wheeler, analyst at large for LightCounting. “We see 1.6T active copper cables (ACCs) as a key tool to support these higher interconnect speeds at manageable power consumption and cost.”
“We’re excited to collaborate with Semtech on this 1.6T interconnect innovation,” said Greg Walz, director of product marketing for high-speed I/O Cables at Amphenol. “The 1.6T ACC is a key addition to our industry-leading interconnect portfolio for leading-edge datacentre customers interested in high-performance, low power solutions.”
