Parade Technologies in Taiwan is set to acquire the assets of Spectra7 Microsystems for $9m in the next two weeks.

Spectra7, which has a design centre in Cork, Ireland, had been developing leading edge active copper cable (ACC) technology using silicon germanium (SiGe). It had been aiming to take advantage of the boom in AI datacentres requiring high speed connections between racks. The company was formed back in 2012 from the merger of Redmere in Cork which was developing the active cable devices and Fresco Microchip in Toronto, Canada which was developing RF, analog and digital semiconductors for consumer devices, including TVs.

In February it signed a major follow on order from Asian datacentre giant Tencent for its GC2502 Dual Channel 56Gbps PAM4Linear Equalizer IC operating in an active copper cable configuration at 200 Gbit/s.

“We are pleased to continue and expand our relationship with Tencent as it continues to advance its datacentre capabilities and performance through the ongoing transition to active copper cabling,” said Omar Javaid, Chief Executive Officer of Spectra7 which also has deals with Luxshare, Foxconn and Amphenol. “ACC can drastically reduce power requirements while operating at the speeds required to support the AI revolution now taking place and driving the start of a new high-performance upgrade cycle.”

“Active copper cabling solutions are a critical part of our datacentre advancement plans, enabling the ultra-high speeds, low latency and low power utilization at a very low cost necessary for successful implementation as datacentres increasingly shift toward ultra-high bandwidth applications, especially AI applications,” said Tom Miao, Tencent Procurement Manager. “Spectra7 has proven to be a reliable high performance partner in this effort, deploying active copper solutions that meet demanding application criteria.”

Parade Technologies is a Canadian supplier of video display, touch controller, and high-speed interface chips. It plans to use use Spectra7’s technology in new high speed consumer designs and  expand into the AI datacentre market. It expects to take on a significant number of Spectra7’s employees to ensure continuity of technical expertise and customer support.

A shareholder meeting has been set for April 14 and the deal is expected to close in the second quarter of 2025. Parade has provided bridge funding of p to $750,000 to keep Spectra7 operating until then.

“We are thrilled by this outcome and excited to close this transaction. Spectra7’s pioneering work and best-in-class Active Copper Cable products have a great partner in Parade, a powerhouse in the industry. Our customers, partners and industry will benefit tremendously,” said Javaid.
