Startup Indichip backed to create Indian SiC wafer fab
Startup Indichip Semiconductors Ltd. has agreed to build a wafer fab making silicon-carbide power chips in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh with an investment of 140 billion rupees (about US$1.6 billion).
Indichip was founded in 2020 and the deal was aided by its joint venture partner Yitoa Technology Inc. (Nakano, Japan) which was formerly Pioneer Micro Technology Corp.
Indichip has entered into a transfer agreement with Yitoa to obtain its technology. Yitoa Technology is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Shenzhen Yitoa Intelligent Control Co. Ltd. (Shenzhen, China). It claims the creation of the wafer fab will be in line with the Indian government’s ‘Make-in-India’ initiative.
The state of Andhra Pradesh has said it will provide land at the Orvakal industrial estate in Kurnool, along with the necessary infrastructure and ecosystem to support the project. The fab is set to open with a production capacity of 10,000 wafers per month, ramping up to 50,000 wafers per month within two to three years, although no explicit time line was provided.
