Waymo rolls out Jaguar self-driving car service in San Francisco
Waymo’s Trusted Tester is a research-focused program that, for the first time, will allows the public in San Francisco, California to hail a self-driving vehicle. This follows a trial with employees in the city earlier in the year.
The trial uses the electric Jaguar I-Pace equipped with the fifth-generation Waymo Driver. Waymo is working with the Custom SOC Business Team in the System LSI division of Samsung, and also has a deall with Intel for processors.
The two companies signed a strategic deal in 2018 for on‑road testing and capturing real-world data to allow Waymo and Jaguar Land Rover engineers to refine technology and deliver optimum safety and reliability. The initial plan was for up to 20,000 I‑Pace vehicles will be built in the first two years of production and be available for riders of Waymo’s driverless service, serving a potential one million trips per day.

The company has been testing the technology in Phoenix, Arizona, for the last four years using Chrysler Pacifica vans.
The San Francisco Trusted Testers can hail autonomous rides for everyday needs anywhere they want to go in the initial service area. However all rides in the program will still have an autonomous specialist on board for now, and our Trusted Testers will also share feedback with us on their ride experience.
The aim is to test the Waymo One app, from pickup and drop-offs, to the ride itself. The company is also working on making the service accessible for people with disabilities, so the Trusted Tester program with riders of all different mobility levels, and those who require a wheelchair accessible vehicle can hail directly from the Waymo One app and provide critical feedback on their experience as well. The company has wheelchair accessible Chrysler vehicles.
