The world’s largest zip maker, YKK, has developed a remote controlled, self-propelled zipper.

A tiny geared motor is combined with a wireless link and can be retrofitted to existing zippers in application such as large tents and other tall industrial materials.

The system has been shown at the Taiyo Kogyo factory in Hirakata where a self-propelled fastener was attached to a 5m high membrane. When the membrane was separated and hung from above and the self-propelled fastener was switched on, the membrane was connected in about 40 seconds.

A self-propelled zip fastener was also attached to two Mac Quick Shelters measuring 4m wide x 4m deep x 2.5m high. When the self-propelled fastener was switched on, the two tents were connected in about 50 seconds, including the ceiling part which cannot be reached by humans, demonstrating the need for such a system.
